Make your own luck

Does it annoy you when people tell you that you only won Olympic Gold because you were lucky ?

I’m the first person to admit I was incredibly lucky to win. I’m possibly the luckiest Gold medallist in Olympic history. But I had to be in position to give myself a chance to win. Competing at 4 Olympics, training 5 hours a day 6 days a week for 12 years is not lucky. You work hard enough for long enough, eventually you make your own luck. People with a negative mindset don’t realise that. Occasionally people have said to me: Geez you are lucky mate. But that doesn’t annoy me because they’re the same people who are sitting on their couch doing nothing. In Australia we call it the tall poppy syndrome and its all too prevalent. If you have succeeded some people just want to knock you down.
